Australian architect Jessica Spresser was on Tuesday named the winner of a national design competition to create the space, which is set to be constructed in coming years.

Ms Spresser, in conjunction with Peter Besley and Arup, was selected from 170 entrants in the design competition.

Planning Minister Rob Stokes said the design celebrates “the natural elements of land, sea and sky that compose the site at Watermans Cove”.

The pavilion will be a space for public use, with the architect declaring it will “act as a meeting palace, a site for events, a memorable part of the city and an oasis of tranquillity”.

Mr Stokes declared the design – familiar of Ancient Greek temples – is “timeless”.

“I love that idea that (it’s) picking up on a local material so it‘ll look authentic in its space,” Mr Stoke said.

He said as the rooftop garden grows it will become an even more authentic part of the waterfront.

Ms Spresser said she was “incredibly honoured” to have been announced the winner of the design competition.

The cost for the pavilion will be borne by developer contributions rather than the taxpayer, but Mr Stokes said it’s expected to come in at under $10 million.
