Mercedes driver charged over Thornleigh road rage axe attack

A man has been charged after allegedly attacking another driver with an axe before fleeing the scene, following a road rage incident.

A man has been charged after allegedly attacking another driver with an axe before fleeing the scene, following a road rage incident in Sydney’s north west yesterday.

The alleged incident took place after a Mercedes and a Honda Accord stopped in traffic near the intersection of Loch Maree Ave and Pennant Hills Road in Thornleigh.

Police say the 41-year-old driver of the Mercedes got out of his car before approaching the 46-year-old Honda driver and yelling at him.

Both men — who are not known to each other — became involved in an altercation.

It’s further alleged the Mercedes driver returned to his vehicle to retrieve a small axe, before striking the Honda driver on the head several times and then driving away.

The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene, before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Shortly after officers from Kuring-Gai Police Area Command responded to the incident, the Mercedes was spotted at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Pennant Hills Road in Wahroonga.

Police stopped the 41-year-old on the Pacific Highway at Waitara and arrested the driver.

He was taken to Hornsby Police Station and charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, armed with intent commit indictable offence and affray.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday 20 January 2020.
