Wrong turn, no injuries, spectacular result

A WRONG turn resulted in a spectacular crash for a P-Plate driver at Lismore Heights on Wednesday evening prompting calls for better signage on Ballina Road.
Duy Nguyen was driving west along Ballina Rd at about 8pm when he thought he could turn left into Kellas Street, opposite Gallagher Drive.
"When I was driving along the road I was looking for my friends house and the street to turn into," he said.
"I saw a sign for Kellas St and I knew that was the road to turn into so I turned left.
"I didn't see the big hole here."
While he wasn't following his GPS, which neighbours said has brought other drivers unstuck at the intersection, Mr Nguyen said it was his first time visiting his friend.
"I was concentrating on looking for the Kellas St sign thats why I didn't see the big slope," he said.
"I think we need to get some better signage here.
"I think as a driver it's easy to turn the wrong way here."
Both Mr Nguyen and his female passenger escaped without a scratch.
The crash drew neighbours out of their houses to see the spectacle of the car down the embankment with its rear wheels in the air.
Jenny and Keith Edmed, who live opposite the Kella's St intersection, said this was the third car in the past year to take a wrong turn at the location.
Mrs Edmed said drivers involved in previous incidents have said they took the left turn because their GPS told them to.
She called on council to upgrade the signage to warn drivers not to make the same mistake.
Council's Assets Manager Scott Turner said while signage on the Bruxner Highway was determined by the RMS, residents could approach Council with any concerns and these would be taken up with the state authority. "If our residents have concerns with signage or safety on an RMS-controlled road we encourage them to put something in writing to Council so we have a clear understanding of the issues," Mr Turner explained. "This will then be taken to the Traffic Advisory Committee, which includes RMS representatives and police. The committee will assess the concerns and determined if any further action is warranted."
