A COUPLE who were uncertain how they were going to afford bringing up their nine-month-old child have finally been graced with a sense of security after attending the Centrelink Job Expo last week.

Tory, baby Toki and Daniel Hardey were contacted by a businessman from Federal about a job vacancy for Mr Hardey after the businessman read about the couple’s situation in The Northern Star.

The couple headed to the job expo seeking an end to Mr Hardey’s year long job hunt after the Lismore resident fell victim to the global financial crisis last year.

The job offer is for a position at an import trading company and after a strong job interview, the young Mr and Mrs Hardey are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“We now have a sense of security at the prospect of having full time work,” Mrs Hardey said.

“It was a pleasant surprise when we found out about the work. All is not lost and we feel really good.

“The atmosphere in the house has really changed and we are very hopeful.

Mr Hardey already has plans for his new income.

“We want to buy household things like a couch, a TV and new clothes for Toki.

The Centrelink Job Expo held at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatics Centre last Friday attracted more than 2000 job seekers and led to 14 positions being filled on the day and employers receiving 647 resumes.

Centrelink Job Expo media officer Paul Creedon said the ‘great success’ was not over yet and he expected a further 160 jobs to be filled as a result of the expo.

“The outcomes that were achieved exceeded our expectations,” he said.

“An example is the Northern Co-operative Meat Company from Casino who posted 15 jobs on the board which they’d had trouble filling.

As a result of the expo, it looks like all of those positions will be filled.
