WORK has begun on the new BMX track at Nesbitt Park in South Lismore - the central feature of the Nesbitt Park Master Plan.
Contractors will construct a series of jumps and berms, with a beginners track for young children and a more difficult course suitable for experienced riders of all ages.
The $80,000 project has been in the pipeline since the Nesbitt Park Master Plan was approved by Council in 2007.
Council's Sport & Recreation Officer James Voght said to date Council has spent $750,000 on the park's redevelopment.
"This is excellent news for people in South Lismore - for a long time residents complained they had no recreational facilities on that side of the river and after an extensive consultation we came up with the Nesbitt Park Master Plan," Mr Voight said.
"To see this final component of the Master Plan come to fruition is very satisfying and means the residents of South Lismore now have a full complement of recreational facilities.
"We receive excellent feedback about Nesbitt Park because it's got something for everyone - lots of walking tracks, exercise equipment for sportspeople, children's play equipment and equipment for people with disabilities, and now a BMX track. It is truly a park for everyone."
If the weather remains fine, Council hopes to have the new BMX track open for community use by the June long weekend.
