Woman can't remember breaking neck

A WOMAN who suffered a broken neck after falling off her horse or being kicked by it has no memory of the accident.

A WOMAN who suffered a broken neck after falling off her horse or being kicked by it has no memory of the accident.

The 33-year-old woman was found by her husband in a paddock at their Myocum property, south of Mullumbimby, yesterday morning.

She was unconscious at the time.

It is not known how long she was there before she was found.

Westpac Life Save Rescue Helicopter was called to the property about 10.45am.

The woman was airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital.

Initial reports suggested she had sustained chest and abdominal injuries, as well as a possible head injury.

But following examinations at Lismore Base Hospital, the helicopter was again called and airlifted the woman to the Gold Coast Hospital.

Doctors determined she had suffered a C2 fracture – commonly known as a broken neck – and needed specialised treatment.

She also sustained a lacerated spleen and a lacerated kidney.

Paramedic Peter Haron said the helicopter arrived at the Gold Coast about 3.30pm yesterday.

“She is in a serious but stable condition,” he said.

“Unfortunately, no-one knows for sure what happened because it wasn’t witnessed by anyone.

“She was found by her husband unconscious in a paddock.

“It appears that she might have been kicked by the horse, or fallen off.

“She can’t remember what happened to her; she has no memory of it at all.

“However she is now awake and talking to us.”

The fracture was ‘fairly serious’, Mr Haron said, although the woman still had full movement of her limbs.

“But she has been transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital as all spinal management patients are,” he said.
