Winter is back this week – BOM forecasts cold nights so don’t put your doona away just yet

Possible thunderstorms and some rain is the forecast for Tuesday, and cold nights for the rest of the week, according to BOM.

Don’t put the winter doona away just yet, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast some cold nights for Northern NSW this week.

Forecaster Melody Sturm said Tuesday will see a change from the sunny conditions Northern NSW has enjoyed recently back to something more ‘winter like’.

“On Monday, it should be mostly dry, except for a slight chance of some rain around Coffs Harbour, but there is a cold front approaching us, and it will go over the area on Tuesday,” she said.

“We do have the chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday across all of Northern NSW, potentially from early afternoon, with showers across Northern NSW up to 5mm.”

The BOM already issued a strong wind warning for Byron and Coffs coasts.

Ms Sturm said that maximum temperatures forecast for Monday are 25C in Ballina, 23C in Byron Bay, 26C in Lismore, Grafton with 28C, Yamba 25C, Murwillumbah 26C, Tweed Heads 24 and 25 in Coffs Harbour.

Tuesday morning temperatures will remain mild, but by Tuesday night those warm temperatures will only be a lovely memory.

The BOM forecaster said places like Tenterfield will see maximum temperatures go from 22 on Monday to 12 on Tuesday.

“Grafton will see a maximum difference of about seven degrees between Tuesday and Wednesday, and other coastal areas will see a change of three to four degrees anyway,” she said.

Minimum temperatures for Wednesday degrees are all forecast in single digits:

• Ballina: 7C

• Byron Bay: 11C

• Lismore: 5C

• Grafton: 5C

• Yamba: 9C

• Murwillumbah: 6C

• Tweed Heads: 7C

• Coffs Harbour: 7C

Ms Sturm said Tuesday and Wednesday will be the coldest nights of the week.

“Thursday night can potentially be as cold, and into Friday, although during the weekend we see temperatures rising again,” she said.

The BOM expert said a warning for sheep graziers in the Northern Tablelands had been issued ahead of the cold front coming in.
