Wet weather is impacting roads and services on the Northern Rivers today

Continued heavy rain can cause flash flooding on roads, and there may not be warning signs in place.

UPDATE 9.20pm: Lismore SES Specialised Flood Rescue team were activated this evening to a car that was reported stuck in flood water.

The SES said it was a timely reminder to not drive, ride or walk in flood water.

"You cannot tell how deep it is, what is beneath the surface, or what the road condition is like.

"There is a lot of rain around, and may see some flash flooding occur- so please stay safe and drive to conditions."

UPDATE 2.15pm: SomeRoads in the Byron Shire are becoming cut as the council warns people to be vigilant if driving and to stay at home if they can.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain for the coast stretching from Wollongong north to the Queensland border.

A flood watch for minor flooding has also been issued for many catchments including the Brunswick River and Marshalls Creek.

Heavy rain this morning (March 21), on top of a wet catchment and constant rain for more than a week, has seen localised flooding in areas including Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores and South Golden Beach.

Council staff are responding as quickly as possible to emergencies relating to roads, sewer and drainage.  People who need help with floods, including sand bags, should call the SES on 132 500.

"Under no circumstances should people drive through flood waters - it is just not worth the risk," Infrastructure Services director, Phil Holloway, said.

"It is impossible to judge how fast the water is travelling or if there is debris under the water, or damage to the road surface," Mr Holloway said.

"People should also take into account that the predications are that this sort of weather will continue for the next several days," he said.

In Ballina, the council advises there are limited services at Ballina Waste Management Centre (WMC) due to heavy rainfall.

The Ballina Shire Council asks people to delay visiting the WMC today, Sunday March 21.

The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is open. Please contact airlines for flight information. Flights may be delayed to due weather impacts at other airports.
