VETERANS and councillors in Kyogle are uniting to turn a vacant, unused shopfront in the town hall into a veterans' support centre.

VETERANS and councillors in Kyogle are uniting to turn a vacant, unused shopfront in the town hall into a veterans’ support centre.

A meeting held by the Kyogle RSL sub-branch recently discussed moving the current support centre from its shared location with Meals-on-Wheels in Kyogle Seniors’ Centre to the shopfront in the KMI hall.

The KMI hall foyer has been closed for decades and was made into two shopfronts which would serve as a perfect place for a veterans’ support service and a place to showcase the RSL honour boards, Kyogle’s deputy mayor and sub-branch RSL junior vice-president Lynette Zito.

“The current space used is small and there is also anissue of confidentiality and privacy,” she said.

Currently, 267 people have signed a petition asking the council to open up the foyer and allow the veterans’ support service to use the space.

Cr Zito expects the matter to go before council in July.
