Later on today, when the Hockeyroos take to the field in an elimination final at the Olympics, two sisters from Cabarita Beach will be one step closer to realising a lifelong dream.
Savannah and Madison Fitzpatrick honed their hockey skills on a scaled hockey pitch under the family home at Tweed before training at the national centre in Perth, and gaining selection in the Tokyo Olympic Squad.
The girls have hockey in their blood, with dad Scott a former Kookaburra, and mum Margie also playing at a high level.
Margie told the ABC it would likely be a ‘family affair’ when the girls play for Olympic glory, with their grandmothers joining the family to cheer them on.
Margie said they had tickets to the 2020 Games, but they were cancelled due to Covid.
The sisters have been instrumental in the Australian team topping their pool undefeated, and blasting through to the quarterfinals.
Madison was not initially selected for the Olympics team, but changes due to Covid-19 saw her included.
And that faith in her has paid off, with Madison scoring the only goal in the win against Japan last week.
On Saturday, Savannah got the Hockeyroos off to a great start when she scored the opening goal against Argentina.
An assist by Savannah later in the game helped seal the win when Emily Chalker scored, taking the score to 2-0.
But Savannah told News Corp the team was not resting on its unbeaten record, and were focused on the elimination quarterfinal.
“We were really quick to brush over the win just then because I think everyone is aware that none of that matters unless we win our next game,” Savannah said.
“We were looking straight ahead to our quarterfinal.”
The Hockeyroos defeated Argentina, Spain, China, Japan and New Zealand to top Pool B, and will play India for a spot in the semi-finals at 1pm today.
