Truck cab fire closes Ballina Road in both directions

Prime mover blaze closes both sides of Ballina Rd in South Lismore on Friday morning.

A blazing truck fire closed both lanes of Ballina Rd on the Wilson River off-ramp, bringing traffic to standstill at the Union St roundabout in South Lismore on Friday morning.

Fire and Rescue NSW Lismore Station Officer Scott Coster said the fire was quickly contained and the driver was unharmed.

“We were called around 10.40am today and both our pumper crews attended as well as a hazmat crew from Goonellabah Fire Station,” he said.

“The truck fire involved the cab of a prime mover which was pulling a flat-bed.”

Mr Coster said the crews used water to extinguish the flames.

“Our crew wearing full PPE (personal protective equipment) accessed water from a nearby hydrant,” he said.

“At the time of the of the fire there were two lanes closed, but one was reopened as soon as it was safe to do so.

“Our crew were at the incident for around an hour.”

Fire and Rescue Goonellabah Retained Firefighter, Vicki Kemister said she and hazmat crew member Chris Johnson also attended to lend support.

She said the hazmat crew were on hand to help prevent contaminants entering the river or other water sources.
