The Peaceful Vet Amy Arnell brings at-home euthanasia to Tweed, Northern Rivers

‘It warms my heart to see the bond humans share with their animals and how they will go to great lengths to look after them in life and death.’

One of the hardest things a family can do is say goodbye to their beloved pet but a new Tweed service hopes to make that farewell a little easier.

Veterinarian Amy Arnell worked in the Northern Rivers for around 10 years before taking a short break to raise her family.

When she returned to the industry, she decided she wanted to do even more to ensure pets are given the best possible goodbye.

She has recently launched The Peaceful Vet – a dedicated veterinary home euthanasia and cremation service.

The Peaceful Vet provides a calming farewell in the comfort of the pet’s home and around loved ones rather than the intimidating surgical room.

She said having a vet who could dedicate themselves to at-home euthanasia meant owners could take their time to say farewell to their furry friend away from the “stress and fuss”.

“It is definitely not a new idea, home visit euthanasias have been around a very long time,” she said.

“But home visits are tricky for vet clinics to organise sometimes.

“I thought a dedicated visit service would be really needed in the community.”

She added it was sometimes difficult to move bigger animals to a vet when they were at the end of their life.

As an owner of 14 animals herself, Dr Arnell knew pets were often treasured parts of the family.

“I really recognise end of life is just as important as all the care we give to animals over their life,” she said.

“I place a lot of importance on, and really value, a peaceful passing for both the animal and owner.

“It’s something that stays with you and a real gift we can offer.”

Upon opening the service, Dr Arnell had already received a swell of positive feedback.

“I think everyone remembers if they’ve had to put an animal to sleep how it feels,” she said.

“It’s an honour for me to be able to help animals pass peacefully where they feel most comfortable.

“It warms my heart to see the bond that humans share with their animals and how they will go to great lengths to look after them in life and death.”
