TELSTRA said it did not know when it would be able to fix a faulty transmission link affecting people in Lismore yesterday.
Customers have complained about crossed lines, call drop-outs, fade-outs, and phones that would ring but have no one on the other end of the line.
Travelworld Lismore manager Cran Follent said they experienced problems all of yesterday.
“Every hour or so, the phone rings and no one’s there,” he said.
“It’s been happening consistently.
“It’s annoying because we’re really busy and it’s just something we don’t want to have to worry about.
“It’s hard to say whether we’ve lost business because of this.
“I guess we would have, but probably not too much. It’s more of a nuisance than anything.”
Telstra’s North Coast area general manager, Michael Sharpe, said it was difficult to tell how many people were being affected by the problem.
“We’re working to fix it, but we have no idea how long that’s going to take because it’s an intermittent fault,” he said.
“We’re in the midst of investigating it, and are hoping to have it resolved shortly.
“Technicians are at several sites trying to work out where the problem is.”
Lismore’s Wilson Motel owner Dean Koch said they had had some minor problems.
“I’ll be talking to someone and then we’ll get cut off,” he said.
“It’s happened a few times.
“We’ve also had times when the phone has rung, but no one’s been on the other end when we answer.
“It’s not too disruptive, but it is an added little nuisance to your day.”
Another business owner said The Northern Star’s phone call was the first they had received yesterday.
“Normally we would have had plenty of calls by now, so something’s obviously going on,” she said.
Telstra said it was first alerted to the problem about 10.30am yesterday.
