A 16 year-old boy is fighting for his life after being critically injured when a tractor rolled on a rural property in Murwillumbah on Tuesday.

Family members and bystanders rushed the young man to Murwillumbah Hospital where he was assessed for serious chest and head injuries and multiple fractures.

Emergency staff called for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter about 4.50pm to assist in an urgent time critical medical transfer.

The helicopter medical team further treated and stabilised the young man at Murwillumbah Hospital before he was placed on life support in an induced coma due to the severity of his injuries.

NSW Ambulance officer Inspector Karl Wilson said the reason for the induced coma was to take stress off the body.

“He had significant injuries,” Mr Wilson said.

“Emergency staff will prioritise what injuries are life-threatening and attend to them in that order.

“They’ll check his brain, his chest and so forth.”

Inspector Wilson said induced comas were a common action taken for serious injuries as they gave the body its best chance to deal with injury trauma.

The Murwillumbah teenager has been flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition for further treatment.
