Residents in Casino are shocked at the death of a teenager after a brawl broke out in the carpark of KFC on Sunday.
Richmond Police District Commander Scott Tanner said footage obtained of the incident showed a large crowd involved in the melee.
“From initial inquiries there seems to have been some kind of arranged meeting,” Supt. Tanner said.
“Out of that meeting there was an altercation that started between a number of persons then a number of other persons became involved,” Supt. Tanner said.
“Some of these people are assisting police with our inquiries.”
Police are also speaking with schools and a range of community organisations and members.
“ Police have concerns with any of these types of incidents,” Supt. Tanner said.
Superintendent Tanner said the event was tragic for that entire community.
“There are a lot of victims in this matter and we encourage people to make the right decisions.”
Owner of Squatters Homestead Motel, Peter Clare said the carparks opposite his business are rife with anti-social activity.
“It was only a matter of time before a disaster like this was going to happen in those carparks,” Mr Clare said.
“We’re forever on the phone to police - at one and two in the morning - trying to get them to come around and move these people on so my guests can sleep.”
Mr Clare has voiced his concerns to the managers of KFC and McDonalds yet nothing has changed.
“They say it’s not our problem, and then police say it should be the business owners problem.”
He said young people keep locals awake doing burnouts in the carparks at night.
“They come out of the KFC drive-through then they go into McDonalds, go around in circles there and then go back through the carpark.
“They are standing on the roofs of cars driving on the wrong side of the road and police don’t seem to want to know about it.”
He said police should have acted faster and that more police are required in Casino.
“It’s sad that a death has had to occur for the police to come around here. It’s a fight that should have been stopped days ago,” he said
Supt. Tanner said despite the incident Casino has a sufficient number of police officers.
“We’re confident we have enough police in the area,” he said.
The teeanger appeared at Lismore Children’s Court on Monday where he was refused bail.
