THE Surfers Rescue 24/7 program has been so successful across the state all of the current NSW government funding has been allocated.
The free program aims to enhance the CPR and board rescue skills of surfers and those in the water who are often first on the scene in an emergency at the beach.
Lifeguard funding project
Ruben Roxburgh from Australian Training Consultancy, a former World Longboard Competitor and lifeguard, believes so strongly in the project, he has funded sessions himself.
"It is a fantastic program," Mr Roxburgh said. "It's for children, and adults, and the community... and it offers a good group of tools and techniques.
"It's about empowering people in the ocean, and being able to give back to the community," he said.
Surfers unsung heroes
By teaching rescue skills and CPR techniques to surfers and other water users, the program aims to make the most of the human resources already available should an emergency arise.
"Surfers are often unsung heroes in the water," Mr Roxburgh said. "We ensure they learn the CPR component as well as the rescue component... so they are better prepared to be able to deal with an event in the ocean."
The program is open to all surfing, sporting and community groups who are looking to improve water safety in the ocean.
Students learn crucial skills
Students from the Shearwater Steiner School got the opportunity to learn the crucial life saving skills at Lake Ainsworth.
More than 85 students, teachers and adults went through the program over two days.
Mr Roxburgh said the feedback was great from the students, who would then take the skills they learnt with them into the upcoming school holidays.
More sponsors are welcome to help keep the program running across the state.
