Some of the best rowers in the country will be heading to the region to participate in the Lismore Rowing Club Regatta next month.

The event, which features an exciting 5km course with the finish line on the Wilson River in the Lismore CBD, has attracted some of the best rowing athletes from as far away as Sydney and Brisbane.

Lismore Rowing Club president Lawrie Lynch said the regatta will commence at 10am on Saturday June 5.

“All the events are over a 5km course and all boats will be coxed,” he said.

With several areas available for spectators, Mr Lynch said the regatta offers a great day out for residents and visitors.

“People can come and watch the event from several spots including the Lismore Rowing Club, the river bank behind Bunnings (off Bruxner Hwy), the river bank at Riverview Park (off Bruxner Hwy), Heritage Park near the Bruxner Hwy Bridge and the finish line area in town,” he said.

“It’s going to be a sensational regatta.”

Mr Lynch said as well as age divisions, there will be school girls and boys races aswell as those for women, men and mixed crews.

“We wanted to make sure clubs could drive here safely on the day.” he said.

“And we hope some local businesses will step up and sponsor a race, it would be great to have more Lismore businesses involved.”

Mr Lynch said the regatta will commence from the LRC clubhouse which is situated between the Lismore Lake and the Wilson River. at Loftville.

“Marshalling and launching of all boats will be adjacent to Lismore Rowing Club Inc Shed, off Bruxner Hwy,” he said.

“All the boats will be rowed upstream to finish in the Lismore city centre and everyone is welcome to come and watch the races adjacent to the Magellan St carpark which is also known as the Rowing Club Carpark.”

Keeping the regatta affordable means they can attract a wide range of entries, Mr Lynch said.

“The winning boat crews will receive special T-shirts specifically designed for the regatta,” he said.

“We hope lots of schools enter their rowers and show the community their skills.

“The final nominations for each event must be made by Tuesday May 11.”

Mr Lynch said Lismore City Council had been helpful with the event’s preperation.
