Yesterday some exciting plays saw Cronulla secure the last spot in the 2021 Australian Senior League Championship final four after taking down Swan Hills Aces 6-4 in Lismore on Monday afternoon.
Baseball Australia’s editor in chief David Penrose said on May 10, some exceptional moves delighted fans and players alike.
“Reilly Vanzanten shut the door as Cronulla secured an extra-inning win after RBI (Run Batted In)-singles from Lachlan Bulmer and Jacob Palmer broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth,” he said.
“The New South Wales charter had to dig deep after the Aces rallied to tie the contest in the bottom of the sixth.
“Cronulla missed a chance to regain the lead in the top of the seventh but Vanzanten ensured they got another chance to hit, stranding a couple of Swan Hills runners to end the seventh and final regulation inning.”
Penrose said Hunter Horsley (dropped third strike) and Vanzanten (double) reached with one out in the eighth.
“Bulmer and Palmer drove them in on consecutive singles,” he said.
“Vanzanten recorded three fly outs to finish off the contest.”
Penrose said the win sets up a rematch of the NSW State Championships final against Macarthur, after the latter sealed top spot in Pool A with a 10-7 win over Victoria’s Eastern Athletics earlier on day three.
“Christopher Fergie, Blake Gooding and Jesse Toon each had two RBIs for Macarthur,” Penrose said.
“Lachlan Bigwood closed out the win on the mound, allowing two runs across 3 1/3 relief innings.”
Penrose said Eastern Athletics finished second in Pool A despite the loss and will face Southern Mariners in a rematch of the Victorian decider.
“The Mariners punched their semi-final ticket with a 6-5 win over Adelaide Armada, then took the lead with a three-run sixth and held Armada at bay, stranding three runners across the final two innings,” he said.
“Thomas Yuile’s RBI-single put Southern Mariners on top in the top of the sixth (and) he went on to score on a double from Ryan Langworthy.
“Joel Poole recorded the final six outs for the Mariners.”
Penrose said Wanneroo collected a 16-4 mercy-rule win over Brisbane Metro to open its account.
Day four action gets underway at Albert Park Baseball Complex from 10am on Tuesday May 11, 2021.
