When the 25th edition of the Byron Bay Triathlon hits town on Sunday May 9, more than 1500 athletes are expected to compete.
This year athletes will compete in Tempta, Sprint and Olympic distances, and will be joined by 100 juniors, many of whom will be competing in their very first triathlon.
To celebrate the milestone silver anniversary event, organisers said they will again welcome Brad ‘The Croc’ Beven as the official event ambassador.
Beven’s success includes four ITU World Championship wins over his many years in the sport which ranked him as World Number One for four years and his contribution to the sport was recognised with an Order of Australia Medal and a place in the esteemed ITU World Hall of Fame.
Bevan said he was excited to be part of the Byron Bay Triathlon for its 25th year.
“The Byron Bay Tri has been a much loved event on the triathlon calendar for some time now,” he said.
“It’s a great end of season get together for many triathlon families.”
Event Race Director Mike Crawley announced a long-term partnership with the Byron Tri Club and Byron Bay Cycle Club.
“We are pleased to once again organise the Byron Bay Tri,” he said.
“It has been great to see enthusiasm from local businesses, offering promotions and incentives to athletes to welcome them to the community and increase economic benefits throughout town.”
Traditionally held on a Saturday afternoon, this year the event has been moved to early Sunday morning in response to the increased daytime traffic since COVID-19, and to reduce the impact on local residents and businesses.
“We know that the Sunday morning event will encourage athletes to bring the family and stay in town for the weekend, while ensuring the legacy of this long standing event”, Crawley said.
Across its 25 years, the Byron Bay Triathlon has raised over $100,000 dollars for local community groups through its Community Grants Scheme, alongside 1030 work experience opportunities for local volunteers and young people.
The 2021 event’s official charity is the Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, with organisers also raising funds for the local Byron Bay AFL, Byron Croquet Club, Byron Bay Runners, Byron Bay Cycle Club and Byron Tri Club.
The event organisers thank local residents and businesses for working with the event despite any inconvenience caused by road closures from 6am to 10am towards Suffolk Park; and until noon in the CBD.
