A SECOND pedestrian crossing is desperately needed for Lennox Head’s main street, according to the Chamber of Commerce.
President Louise Owen said the current situation was inconvenient and dangerous.
“We need a safe pedestrian crossing at the northern end of Ballina Street,” she said.
“Logic must prevail.
“The only crossing we’ve got is right at the other end of the street.
“We need another one up near the bus stop, near the supermarket and the two parks.
“I don’t have an exact preferred spot, but a crossing down this end of town is warranted.”
The Chamber of Commerce will push for the second crossing as part of the review of Ballina Shire Council’s Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan.
The review, which is now under way, will come up with a prioritised program of works over a five-year period.
The last plan was completed in 2004.
It nominated 140 capital works and 47 maintenance items, and the council says that a ‘significant number of the highest priority items’ have now been completed.
Ms Owen said the council should also consider a pedestrian crossing in Park Lane at Lennox Head.
“It’s crazy that there’s no crossing, and there’s not even one planned for when the upgrade happens,” she said.
“You have Williams Reserve right there, which is packed when sport is on.
“And then people want to come over to the shops or the beach – it would be much safer if there was an actual pedestrian crossing for people to use.
“If you have a happy community then everything works out well.”
Residents of the Ballina Shire are encouraged to make suggestions for the council’s next pedestrian plan.
