A LOCAL 22-year-old quilting show has been revived after a 10-year break and a once uncertain future.
Bangalow Quilters Incorporated is a 14-member social group originating in 1988 but dwindling numbers have led to the group’s near extinction.
The Bangalow Quilt Show has not been seen for a decade but the modern day members have pulled together years of quilting work to present this weekend.
“There is a lot of years work in this show and we are trying to raise awareness about the group to potential members,” Bangalow Quilters Incorporated president Elizabeth Casmir said.
“I moved up from Sydney five years ago and retirement can bring you a void. Quilting gives all of us something to do as well as a social outlet.”
Colourful handmade quilts line the interior of the All Souls Anglican Church Hall in Bangalow in preparation for the weekend’s show.
Mrs Casmir said she couldn’t even imagine how many years work had gone into all the quilts in the hall as she devoted one year alone to making some quilts.
“Depending on the size, the time to make one quilt can vary between a few weeks and a year,” Mrs Casmir said.
“I have given all mine away other than the ones on the beds at home.”
These intricate give-aways are donated to local charities and organisations such as the children’s hospital and Feros Nursing home.
With one quilt valued at about $4500, you would think the gifts would be a rare occurrence but the group has donated 70 quilts to the nursing home alone.
“It is good to be able to donate to these local charities,” club member Lyn Sergeant said.
Founding member Leonie Olive is still a passionate quilter who remembers exactly how she fell in love with quilting.
“I gave birth to my son and I wanted to make him a quilt and once I made it the first time I was hooked,” Mrs Olive said.
The quilt show is on today and tomorrow at the All Souls Anglican Church Hall in Bangalow between 9am and 4pm.
Entry is $5 for adults while children are free
