Quarry expansion plans crushed

CHAMPIONS Quarry today lost its Land and Environment Court appeal against the city council's decision to reject its proposal to expand its quarrying operation.

CHAMPIONS Quarry today lost its Land and Environment Court appeal against Lismore City Council’s decision to reject its proposal to expand it’s quarrying operation.

In summarising the decision, the Land and Environment Court’s senior commissioner cited the “Wooley bund” as a primary issue of concern for refusing the application, as well as adverse acoustic and visual impacts on neighbouring properties.

As reported in today’s Northern Star, the council has spent $1.25 million defending its decision.

Mr Champion declined to comment on the outcome.

Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell said she was pleased the council’s concerns with the extension were supported by the court.

“Today we have achieved the result we have been working towards, which we believe to be in the best interests of this community,” she said.
