A VOLUNTEER-run Toowoomba organisation has slammed the culprits behind a brazen break-and-enter late last week.

The DownsSteam Tourist Railway and Museum on Cambooya St in Drayton is counting the cost of the burglary, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.

CCTV footage showed a hooded figure exit a car out the front of the site at 4.20am, use boltcutters to break through the front gate before breaking into the entrance shed and stealing money from the museum's wishing well.

Museum president Ros Scotney said she was "hugely disappointed" by the crime, which had caused nearly $500 in damage.

"They got stuck into our wishing well, which a volunteer made, and stole cash," she said.

"The boys are reckoning the repairs will cost between $400 to $500, which is a lot to us.

"It also forces our volunteers to spend time fixing everything, which could've been spent on the restoration of our vintage trains.

"You just feel disappointed that there are people who resort to doing this."

The organisation is now installing CCTV cameras inside the entrance shed.

People with any information about the incident should call Police Link on 131 444.
