A northern NSW man scratched a police officer and bit another so savagely they needed surgery following a frantic arrest.
Adam Reeca Paget from Urbenville in the Northern Tablelands dodged jail-time after pleading guilty to common assault and contravening an apprehended violence order (AVO).
The 39-year-old was initially charged with one count of wounding police and two counts each of hindering or resisting police and assaulting police and causing actual bodily harm.
Defence lawyer James Fuggle bargained with prosecutors, resulting in the pleas on the lesser charges, it was revealed in Lismore Local Court on Monday.
The court heard Paget, a father-of-three, latched onto the hand of a 27-year-old constable with his teeth during the arrest for domestic violence matters at a Tooloom St, Urbenville property about 8pm on September 17.
Paget also scratched a 24-year-old constable.
The officer who was bitten had to undergo surgery, the court heard.
Paget was refused bail at the time and kept behind bars on remand.
Magistrate Kathy Crittenden convicted Paget in Lismore Local Court on Monday.
Paget was sentenced to a two-year community correction order, including domestic violence education programs and mental health treatment.
Paget was released and ordered to report to authorities within 48 hours.
