A man who hit a police officer with a car and threatened a woman will seek further help with his drug and alcohol problems before being sentenced.

Ulli Jansen, 35, had pleaded guilty in March 2021 to a string of offences related to a police pursuit and appeared in person in Lismore Local Court on Wednesday.

According to agreed facts, police were patrolling at South Lismore about 2am on September 21, 2020, when they detected a black ute with stolen registration plates.

The driver, Jansen, failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated but when speeds reached 125km/h in a 50 zone police stopped the chase.

Police then went to a property at Bottle Creek about 4am to assist a 43-year-old woman who had been found by a farmer.

Agreed facts state the woman was a passenger in the black ute and shortly after the pursuit had an argument with Jansen – who was known to her – before he stopped the car and they got out.

Jansen threatened the woman telling her “get out of the car or I’ll smash you”.

He then abandoned the woman and she hid in a paddock.

Police found the black ute on Union Street in South Lismore about 6pm the same day and approached the vehicle.

According to agreed facts, a senior constable opened the driver’s door before Jansen reversed at speed, striking the officer and sending him “flying” about four metres.

Another officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

He then rammed a fully marked police car, causing front-end damage, before another officer was able to remove him from the vehicle and arrest him.

The senior constable who was struck by the door suffered minor injuries to both arms.

Inside the car, Jansen was also found with a black baton, a knife, and a Quetiapine blister pack.

He has denied ownership of the baton.

His charges include causing a police pursuit, excessive speeding, driving furiously and causing bodily harm, driving while disqualified, resisting arrest, attempting to stalk with the intention of causing fear of harm, possessing a knife, possessing a prohibited weapon, two counts of using a vehicle with unauthorised number plates and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

The matter had been on pause due to Jansen’s stint at the Balund-a, which is a residential diversionary program co-ordinated by Corrective Services NSW.

However, Jansen completed the program in early January and solicitor Philip Crick now told the court Jansen wanted to move to Tamworth while starting work and completing the The Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment Program.

The program, known as Merit, provides alcohol and drug treatment to those before the courts.

Magistrate Michael Dakin consented to the move given Jansen abstained from drugs and did not get in the driver’s seat of a car for any reason.

The police prosecutor also handed up compensation documents – which related to money sought for the damage of the police vehicle.

Magistrate Dakin adjourned the matter for further mention on February 16 at Lismore Local Court.
