UPDATE: Police have recovered a white SUV used as a getaway vehicle by the thieves who broke into the Highfields Coles supermarket.

The vehicle was stolen from an Oakey resident late Tuesday evening and returned to the town to be dumped at an agricultural supply store on Fitzpatrick St, earlier today.

Police have appealed for information from anyone who was up and about early today who may have seen three people acting suspiciously in the area.

The thieves may have fled on foot or transferred to a second vehicle.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Tony Morris said the trio stole several mobile phones after using a hammer to smash their way through the glass door at Coles.

They also entered a nearby stationery store but did not appear to have stolen anything.

If you have information for the investigators phone Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
