A Lismore man has been jailed after he threatened to kill a councillor and tried to burn down his home over a Facebook stoush.

Shane Gregory Smith, 54, pleaded guilty to three counts of intimidation after he threatened three people in February, including Lismore City councillor Big Rob.

He also pleaded guilty to one count of property damage and one count of high-range drink driving.

The court was told Smith went to Cr Rob’s home about 10pm on February 1.

Cr Rob heard three loud bangs on the door and Smith began screaming about a social media issues, police state in court documents.

“F--king open the door c--t. I’m going to kill you,” Smith yelled.Cr Rob told Smith he would call police and Smith threatened to “burn you out”.

Smith kicked the door and pounded on it with a metal object.

Police state Cr Rob believed Smith “would gain entry and kill him”.

Smith then used a lighter and cardboard to attempt to “burn the door down”.

Cr Rob used a glass of water to extinguish the cardboard.

Later, on February 10, Smith stalked and intimidated a woman and intimidated a man in the Lismore area, police state.

On Monday, Smith was convicted and sentenced to an overarching prison term of 12 months, with a nine month non-parole period.

He is due to be released on August 12 next year. 

‘I’ll burn you out’: Lismore man threatened to kill councillor

March 13: A Lismore man threatened to kill a councillor and tried to burn down his home over a Facebook altercation, a court heard.

Shane Gregory Smith faced Lismore Local Court on Monday.

The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to to intimidation and property damage after a rampage at Lismore City councillor Big Rob’s home address.

Smith went to Mr Rob’s Lismore home about 10pm on February 1, according to court documents.

Mr Rob was home when he heard three loud bangs on the door and Smith began screaming about a Facebook issue.

“Fucking open the door c--t. I’m going to kill you,” Smith said.

Mr Rob told Smith he would call police and Smith responded: “I’ll burn you out”.

The councillor heard eight or nine more loud bangs believed to be caused by a metal object.

“This caused (Mr Rob) to fear for his life as he believed the accused would gain entry and kill him,” police facts state.

Mr Rob wedged his foot against the door to stop Smith from entering while he called police.

Smith began kicking the door, attempting to gain entry.

The banging and yelling ceased for a time.

Mr Rob moved to a bedroom overlooking a car park and spotted Smith walking back towards the house. He ran to the door to again stop Smith breaking in, the documents state.

Mr Rob heard what seemed to be the clicking of a lighter and he asked whether Smith was “trying to burn the door down”.

He noticed the flickering of a fire through the gap at the bottom of the door.

Mr Rob ran to the kitchen, filled up a glass of water and poured it under the door, extinguishing the cardboard Smith used to ignite the fire.

Police found Smith with a lighter and cardboard soon after, the documents state.

Smith admitted to banging on the door and lighting the fire.

Big Rob was not physically harmed and is seeking compensation for damages.

Smith has also been charged separately with stalking and intimidating a woman and intimidating a man on February 10.

Smith is due to face Lismore Local Court again on April 17.

His bail was continued.
