A tobacco and gift shop in Casino has been left badly damaged after a suspicious explosion started a fire which ripped through the business in the early hours of the morning.

Police have been trying to track down a man seen leaving the Barker St premises shortly before the explosion about 3.40am on Thursday, according to a statement.

It’s believed the man may have been injured in the explosion and requires medical aid.

Residents living nearby were evacuated by emergency services.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said five trucks were called in to contain the fire, which was extinguished by about 4.30am.

“When crews arrived, the floor (of the shop) was well alight,” Mr Dewberry said.

He said firefighters were concerned the fire would spread to adjoining properties.

As police continue to investigate, Mr Dewberry said it was not uncommon for loud bangs and explosions to be heard during fires.

He said Fire and Rescue investigators were working with police to determine what happened.

Richmond Police District officers set up a crime scene at the shop and have appealed for information.
