Police allege the stolen Mercedes reached speeds of 200km/h before it crashed

A teenage driver has been charged over a string of offences allegedly committed over a three-week period, including stealing a luxury car.

A 19-year-old from Tweed Heads has been charged with numerous offences following a crash in the Tugun Tunnel.

About 3.00am (Friday April 30), a blue Mercedes AMG was stolen from an address in North

Point Ave, Kingscliff while the owners were asleep.

Police will allege the 19-year-old and others entered the occupied home and stole car

keys and other items before stealing the motor vehicle.

About 4am on Friday, April 30, this vehicle was involved in a collision with another car, a Toyota Corolla, on the M1 in the Tugun Tunnel (near the Gold Coast Hwy).

Immediately after the collision police allege the 19-year-old male, who was the driver, along

with two other males ran from Mercedes wagon without rendering assistance to the injured driver of the other vehicle.

The crash caused the other driver – a 21-year-old man – to suffer head and whiplash injuries.

Police will allege that at the time of the collision the stolen Mercedes AMG was travelling at

200km/h.

Investigations commenced and about 2pm on Friday the 19-year-old male was located at an

address in Tweed Heads South and arrested. He was conveyed to Tweed Heads Police Station and interviewed.

He has been charged with 16 traffic and property related offences relating to the aggravated break enter and stealing incident on Thursday at Kingscliff, the crash in the Tugun Tunnel and other stolen motor vehicle and property offences committed in the Kingscliff and Casuarina area in the last three weeks.

He was also charged with an outstanding warrant. He was bail refused at Tweed Heads Court on the May 1.

Charges include being carried in a conveyance x 2, receiving property outside NSW x 2, being an unlicensed driver x 3, stealing a motor vehicle, larceny, concealing a serious offence, police pursuit (Not Stop), driving conveyance without consent x 2,

aggravated entering a dwelling, not rendering assistance at an accident and driving at speed/dangerous.

Police investigations were ongoing, and they asked anyone with further information to contact Tweed Heads Police.
