A magistrate has slammed two teens who bashed a man and filmed the violence soon after their victim emerged from using cocaine at a Byron Bay park toilet block.

A magistrate has slammed two teenagers who bashed a man and filmed the violence soon after their victim emerged from using cocaine at a Byron Bay park toilet block.
Lismore’s Martin Gordon, 18, has pleaded guilty at Lismore Local Court to two counts of common assault.
The man who was attacked was enjoying a night out with friends in the northern NSW tourism hub on September 16 last year, police state in court documents.
He purchased cocaine and used the illicit drug at the Apex Park toilet block.
Police state the victim was walking alone when he crossed paths with Gordon, 18, and co-offender Brandan Kelly, 19, at Railway Park on Jonson St about 4.30am.
Kelly was captured on Byron Bay council CCTV punching the man in the face, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Gordon then kicked the victim in the face and chest while filming on his phone, police state.
The pair spoke to the victim as he remained on the ground and police soon arrived.
The victim was taken to Byron Central Hospital to be treated for bruising to his face and ribs, as well as a bloody nose.
Defence lawyer Natasha Wood told the court Gordon understood his behaviour was “unacceptable” and said he pleaded guilty right away.
“He is Aboriginal and strongly supported by his family. There has been no further violence since his offending,” she said.
Gordon was quiet and looked down at his sneakers during sentencing.
Magistrate Michael Dakin told Gordon sarcastically that he was “very brave” and advised him: “I don’t think much of kicking”.
Mr Dakin added that Gordon “recorded kicking a man in the head while on the ground”. “Where were you thinking of putting that? TikTok?” he asked.
“It’s particularly cowardly kicking a man on the ground. He was in no position to fight back.
“This type of violence on the street late at night is far too common.
“Don’t expect sympathy from these courts if you’re kicking people on the ground.”
Gordon was sentenced to a two-year community correction order and a conviction was recorded.
Kelly has pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm and is due to be sentenced on July 4.
