A North Coast man facing a slew of child sexual abuse charges remains in custody on remand as his lawyer has flagged a potential guilty plea.
East Lismore man Nathan Williams has been accused of aggravated sexual assault – inflict actual bodily harm, intentionally sexually touching a child aged 10-16 years, and two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a person under the age of 16 years.
The 42-year-old man was due to face Lismore District Court on Friday.
The case has been held up by an assortment of “fitness” assessments and reports, the court heard.
Prosecutors for the Crown have listed assault occasioning actual bodily harm as a back-up charge.
Defence barrister Jason Watts told the court there had been a to-and-fro about Williams’ capacity to attend and understand court proceedings.
He said Williams had a better understanding of his options in the case, described as having a chequered history.
“I am negotiating with the Crown to see if a guilty plea can be accepted,” Mr Watts said.
Mr Watts told the court the alleged victim was 13 at the time of his client’s alleged offending.
Judge Jonathan Priestley stood the case down for further mention on September 22.
