A Queenslander tailgated a motorcyclist in a high performance 4WD before crashing into a tree while heading to Byron Bay, with his passengers flown to hospital with serious injuries.

Jagjit Singh faced Lismore Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, driving under the influence and driving recklessly.

Police documents tendered to court state the 32-year-old was driving a Ford Ranger Raptor along Kyogle Rd, Terragon with two passengers when he began tailgating a motorcyclist about 4.30pm on October 8, 2022.

The rider pulled over on the single-lane road to let Singh past, but he pulled behind her and continued to tailgate. She feared she would be “rammed” and sped up to create a large gap, documents continue.

When another rider tried to overtake Singh, the offender swerved onto the other side of the road four times to prevent him from passing.

The motorbikes stopped on the side of the road and travelled slowly behind Singh when he eventually passed them.

However his vehicle veered off the road on a sharp turn and hit a large tree head-on along Doon Doon Rd. The riders caught up with the vehicle and saw Singh and a passenger trapped in the front seats as the back passenger climbed out of the vehicle.

Two passengers were flown to hospital.

Rural Fire Service and Police Rescue freed the men and noticed Singh smelt of alcohol.

“The offender was suffering an injury and was laying down preventing any further assessment of his sobriety,” police facts state.

The front passenger was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane suffering a fractured leg, knee and pelvis along with a rib and nose injury. He needed five surgeries and stayed in hospital for three months.

The back passenger was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital with a neck injury, broken nose and collarbone along with stomach injuries. He required surgery for a hernia and was fitted with a stoma bag.

Singh suffered a torn aorta and had a prolonged hospital recovery.

The offender told police he had no recollection of the crash or the events leading up to it.

The case has been adjourned for sentence on January 15 and Singh remains on bail.
