Dunoon man who allegedly fired shots at residents with intent to murder fronts court

A man who allegedly shot a firearm with the intent to murder Dunoon residents has fronted court again.

Anthony Keith Gifford, 63, appeared via video link for the Lismore Local Court mention.

Mr Gifford faces 17 charges, including four counts of firing a firearm at a house with disregard for safety, two counts of shooting with intent to murder, three counts of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, destroy and damaging property with intent to endanger life.

He has not entered any formal pleas.

Police were called to Dunoon after reports of shots fired at a home on Rayward Rd and one on Duncan Rd, about 9pm on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

Police will allege more than 20 shots were fired, with 12 police officers and six local residents “taking refuge in a nearby home and other residents instructed to remain in their homes.”

Specialist units were deployed to assist in the operation – including officers attached to the Tactical Operations Regional Response, negotiators and Police Rescue.

During his mention on Wednesday, his solicitor James Fuggle told the court the “bulk of the brief had been served”.

“There are a number of outstanding statements and the matter will have to go for a brief compliance,” he said.

The DPP prosecutor said they were still waiting on material, including a transcript of recordings and a police statement.

The matter was adjourned for July 14 for a brief compliance mention.
