Charles John Torrens remanded in custody, accused of drink driving death of 73-year-old Joan Harrison at Casino

Police allege a North Coast man was high-range drink driving when he struck and killed a 73-year-old woman at Casino in April. Here’s what’s happening with the case.

A North Coast man who police allege was high-range drink driving when he struck and killed a 73-year-old woman at Casino in April remains in custody as his case proceeds.

Mallanganee’s Charles John Torrens, 57, has been charged with aggravated dangerous driving causing death, aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, causing bodily harm by misconduct, dangerous driving, negligent driving and high-range drink driving.

His case was mentioned in Lismore Local Court on Wednesday, before Magistrate Michael Dakin. Torrens did not appear.

Torrens has not entered pleas.

Emergency services were called to Barker St, Casino after two women were struck by a Toyota Camry sedan about 11am on April 13.

Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics administered CPR to Joan Harrison.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service flew Ms Harrison her to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, but she tragically died in hospital.

Patricia Hogan, 74, was treated by paramedics and taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious condition.

Police allege Torrens returned a positive breath test at the scene and later recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.155 – more than three times the limit.

Mr Dakin adjourned the case to September 27 for charge certification.
