Alleged rape victim tells court her grandfather ‘had a sinister nature’

A young Tweed Heads woman has detailed the horrific sex abuse her grandfather inflicted on her as she read from her victim impact statement in court.

The Northern Rivers’ man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, fronted Lismore District Court on June 2.

He is charged with sexual intercourse without consent.

The charges relate to his granddaughter, who alleges the event took place when she was 20-years-old.

As the sentencing proceedings started on Friday, his granddaughter bravely read her victim impact statement to the Lismore court via video link, detailing how the event had ruptured her life.

“I feel horrified to think he had a sinister nature, I’m his granddaughter,” she said.

“My life has been shattered, I have to put the pieces together because he broke them.”

She told the courtroom he had taken her “innocence and sweetness”, and that she was now facing failing classes due to the traumatic event.

“I don’t trust anyone around me,” she said.

“I have not only lost my grandfather but my home and my family because I stood up for what was right.”

The court heard matters had been held up due to minor disputes between both parties.

Judge Jeffrey McLennan urged both parties that it was “undesirable to wait” longer for a sentence date and adjourned the matter for August 30.

The man was allowed to continue his bail undertaking.
