THE legendry Benita Collins from Play School will be Lismore's our Oz Day ambassador in January next year.

Lismore City Council announced the appointment today and to celebrate, it has extended the deadline for nominations in the 2013 Australia Day Awards to January 7.

The 30-year veteran of the iconic Australian children's show has literally delighted generations of Australians.

"It is so wonderful to have such a high profile person coming to Lismore… and someone so well loved," Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell said.

"I used to watch Play School as a parent and I loved her! We're so excited."

Australia Day nominations are open in the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Aboriginal Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Art/Cultural, Sustainable Environment, Services in Community (individual and group), Sportsperson (junior and senior) and Sports (team/group/organisation).

Application forms can be downloaded from Council's website.

The 2013 Australia Day Awards ceremony and announcement of winners will be held on January 26 at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre.
