BUNGLED signs banning alcohol consumption in Lismore and Nimbin are going to be changed.

In July 2009 Lismore City Council resolved to establish alcohol-free zones in both towns until June 2013, but the signs erected by the Council say the zone only applies until July 2012.

The Council's manager of development and compliance, Peter Jeuken, said stickers will be used to alter the incorrect date at a "minimal cost".

When asked how the error occurred, Mr Jeuken replied "we don't know".

The minor change will be undertaken as part of plans to re-establish alcohol-free zones in Nimbin and Lismore.

Mr Jeuken said the alcohol-free zones are being reviewed to allow the Council to approve alcohol use at "minor" events such as wine tasting at the Lismore Produce Market.

Alcohol-free zones can be applied to public roads, footpaths or public car parks for a period not exceeding four years.

Richmond Local Area Command's licensing supervisor has told the Council the bans "have a significant" impact on reducing anti-social behaviour.

"Police are using their powers to confiscate and dispose of alcohol from people who are drinking in the alcohol-free zones which is reducing crime and making Lismore and Nimbin a safer place for residents and visitors."
