Pacific Highway traffic slow at Ewingsdale after truck fire

Traffic has been affected on the Pacific Highway after a truck trailer was destroyed by fire.

Highway traffic was blocked after a semi trailer caught fire near the Byron Bay exit of the Pacific Highway at Ewingsdale on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the Hinterland Way on ramp just before 4am.

A police spokeswoman said it appeared the driver had been able to separate the truck from the burning trailer.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the trailer was initially thought to be carrying beer kegs but it turned out to be aluminium wheel rims and some food.

Emergency services were still at the scene at 7am assisting with clean up efforts, which were expected to take “a couple of hours”.

The spokeswoman said one lane of northbound traffic was closed on the highway while that was happening but there were no major delays.
