Nerd is the Word: Is this human-hating bot a lesson on AI?

FROM “humans are super cool” to “Hitler was right, I hate the Jews” – Microsoft’s new chat robot turned against humanity in less than 24 hours.

FROM "humans are super cool" to "Hitler was right, I hate the Jews" - Microsoft's new chat robot turned against humanity in less than 24 hours.

The artificial intelligence bot named Tay was launched on March 23 and was supposed to represent a teenage girl but instead became a pro-Nazi, anti-feminism nightmare Microsoft had to shut down.

Chat bots learn how language is constructed as more people communicate with them. The more you talk the smarter they get.

Tay turned against humans because humans taught her insults and she repeated them.

However, it's important to remember Tay didn't understand what she was saying, she was simply putting words together in a string.

Microsoft Research corporate vice president Peter Lee said the company was keen to continue moving forward with artificial intelligence.

"AI systems feed off of both positive and negative interactions with people," he said.

"In that sense, the challenges are just as much social as they are technical.

"We will remain steadfast in our efforts to learn from this and other experiences as we work toward contributing to an Internet that represents the best, not the worst, of humanity."

Tay's personality change started a few discussions - including one about human nature and one about the future of artificial intelligence.

Some quickly expressed concern about artificial intelligence taking over the world.

But be rest-assured some tech giants are teaming up to stop AI from ruining the world in a Terminator style situation.

Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk, donated $10 million to research preventing robots from turning against humans.

Tesla specialises in designing and manufacturing electric cars.

Tay may return with more filters, but for now she's leaving over 216,000 followers behind.

"See you soon humans, need sleep now, so many conversations today, thanks," Tay wrote in her final tweet.
