OPINION: Wish I had more ticker over organs

I MUST say that I am looking at organ donation in a different light after reading our story on page three of today’s paper.

I MUST say that I am looking at organ donation in a different light after reading our story on page three of today's paper.

Up until reading that story, I would have definitely placed myself firmly in the camp of not wanting to donate my organs.

Now I am thinking twice.

I guess my nervousness about donating organs stems from not wanting anyone chopping me up after I die. I have this sense that I wanted to remain 'whole', if you know what I am saying.

The flip side of that is after you die, you are dead, so what does it matter what happens to your body parts?

Indeed, if you read our page three story it can save someone's life and surely that is more important.

The other thing that has previously held me back from donating my organs was the worry they'd be too clapped out for anyone else to use.

I'm sure medical staff can make that assessment at the time, but if there is anything salvageable there, then go for it.

My wife is an organ donor and has been for some time.

She's been very clear about it for a number of years and you have got to admire her courage.

Perhaps I am not made of such stern stuff, but I have been equally adamant that I wouldn't donate my organs.

Pardon the pun, it is a bit of a no brainer that donating your organs could save another life and that makes it all worthwhile.

Now if I can overcome my silly fears and sign up I might just give it a go.
