One man is dead and another in a critical condition after a head-on crash in the state’s north overnight.
Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway at Woodburn, about 35km south of Lismore, around 7.10pm on Thursday.
Police rescue located one man trapped inside his vehicle and were able to free him with the support of Fire and Rescue Evans Head.
Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) operators from the Casino unit also assisted, and the driver was treated by a Westpac Rescue Helicopter critical care team and paramedics - but the 39-year-old died at the scene.
A 23-year-old man - the driver of the other vehicle - was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Officers from Richmond Police District established a crime scene and have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
