NSW North Coast marks 2022 Melbourne Cup: Photos

From the clubs and pubs to backyard barbies - North Coast revellers have been getting their party on this afternoon to celebrate the 2022 Melbourne Cup.

Many have dressed for success - with hats and fascinators to the fore while many a gent also made a big effort.

The Cup is as ever - even through the Covid years - a grand social occasion for people to come together.

It’s also the unofficial start of the run to Christmas, summer holidays and the party season.

The field was reduced to 22 horses after Lunar Flare joined Point Nepean as a late scratching.

The Group 1 Melbourne Cup is a $7.75m race. On top of the prize purse on offer, the winning connections will collect a 18ct solid gold trophy valued at $250,000.

Byron Bay:

Lismore:

Coffs Harbour:

Fancy fashion was on display at the Ce.x club in Coffs Harbour as residents celebrated the Melbourne Cup in style.

A prize was awarded for best dressed however all in attendance were certainly dressed for the occasion.

A two course buffet meal was on offer, with plenty of beverages available, while local artist Kailey Pallas serenaded the crowd.

Grafton

The sun came out to play in the Jacaranda capital, providing a stunning backdrop for the race that stops a nation.

At the Clocktower Hotel, nostalgia was key with lines still long at the TAB, while the Grafton District Services Club was entertained by former X-Factor star Justin Standley.

Tweed Heads

The Ivory Tavern opened its’ doors for the pub’s first Melbourne Cup celebrations in two years, see how the Tweed Heads locals celebrated.

Cup fast facts

The purse for the top place-getters is handsome, $4.4 million for first, $1.1m for second and $550,000 for third.
