More than $20 million will be spent on new affordable and social housing developments on the Northern Rivers in the next two years.

North Coast Community Housing chief executive, John McKenna, said they were working on five projects across the region.

The state government, through the Community Housing Infrastructure Fund, has contributed $4 million for three of those developments – a 30-unit project in McKenzie Street at Lismore, 24 units in Bimble Ave at Grafton, and nine units in Callistemon Street at Casino.

Mr McKenna thanked the government for its “foresight” in granting the funding.

“This grant, combined with our funding and land will see many in our community safely in their own home,” he said.

The total cost of the three developments to build is $14.6 million.

The land is owned by NCCH and the mixed tenure developments will include homes for purchase, together with affordable rentals and social housing.

Two additional developments recently announced by NCCH include a 25-unit project in Station Street, Mullumbimby, and the transfer of 12 units at Laurel Lodge from NSW Health to NCCH.

The Mullumbimby project will cost $7.9 million and will deliver five affordable units for sale, and 20 for rent.

Mr McKenna said NCCH would refurbish the Laurel Lodge units and make them ready for social housing by late 2021.

“NCCH has recognised that there is an urgent need in our community, we acted and we know these will be the first of many new developments,” Mr McKenna said.

“We look forward to continuing to fill this housing need on the Northern Rivers.”
