New development ‘gets back to the old ideal of living’

A NEW eco community village project is about "sustainability and treading lightly upon the land".

A UNIQUE, community owned eco village development program is taking shape in the hinterland behind Brunswick Heads.

Looking out across Brunswick Heads to the ocean, the Eco Village will come together on land currently owned by Kelvin and Skai Daly who are launching a website on July 13 for potential participants to, "see the broad investigations undertaken so far and see whether they are interested in participating."

The website will also have details of four seasonal field days.

There will also be five weekend workshops spaced over 12 months that will create the substance of the village development program.

"We're right at the beginning of our planning process that will eventually engage with council and state planning," Mr Daly, the land steward and conceptualiser, said.

"The project will start as an educational process that will disseminate and gather information in a symbiotic way to feed into the planning process.

"The project is about sustainability and treading lightly upon the land.

"Our hope is to get back to community inspired living which is an old ideal of living."

The project has been founded by a group of 11 locals assisting with legal, planning, architecture and education.

"The education component of the project, the VDP, will be delivered by Shane Sylvanspring, who completed his eco-development design education at Findhorn Eco Village in Northern Scotland, following the Global Eco Village training framework," Mr Daly said.

"Findhorn gives a good historical reference point as to what can be accomplished in this area, allowing for the stark differences between the climates here and in Scotland.

"This is a chance to connect with a sustainable and cooperative model of living that is already supported by having land available rather than being a philosophical ideal that then has to find land upon which to build a community."
