Nestle-In Childcare Centres plans to build $2.9 million childcare centre expansion in Alstonville

An extensive childcare centre expansion is on the table for Alstonville, but the plan would require changes to the proposed site. Here’s what’s planned.

An extensive $2.9 million childcare centre expansion plan is on the cards for Alstonville.

A development application has been lodged with Ballina Shire Council on behalf of Nestle-In Childcare Centres Pty Ltd.

The plan is to expand their current centre into a two storey childcare facility with a capacity of 114 children.

Developers seek approval to forge ahead with the three-stage development of the site at 9 Bugden Ave and 2 South St.

Located immediately north of the Alstonville village town centre, the current site includes a childcare centre, bakery, hairdresser and older-style residential units.

These would mostly make way for the new project, but the bakery would be retained.

Developers have sought an allowance to build higher than the current maximum height of 8.5 metres.

The development would include demolition, earthworks, servicing, vegetation management works and carparking over an area of 2023 sqm.

The council has placed conditions on the design of the centre to keep the look within the character of Alstonville – including design features like traditional roofing and pitches, timber cladding and window hoods.

“The proposed new buildings have been designed to reflect the predominantly federation bungalow vernacular largely used in the local commercial and residential building fabric of Alstonville’s Heritage buildings,” developers stated.

“The proposal will provide a deep pedestrian pathways at ground level at the key Bugden Ave/South St corner including along the frontage of the existing bakery and proposed childcare centre.”

The Paddy Bugden Memorial which sits adjacent to the Bugden Ave site is an item of local environmental heritage. It was dedicated in 1948 by the Alstonville RSL.

A plinth and sculpture were both erected in the 1990s.

Project designers for Nestle-In Childcare Centres said: “The proposed new buildings on site have been designed to be sympathetic to the sites location adjoining the Memorial Park reserve area and also to minimise any impact on the Paddy Bugden VC Memorial Cenotaph and sculpture located within the park.”

Developers said existing buildings would be retained and renovated.

The bulk of the complex would lie on the streetfronts to allow play areas to be on the northern side.

The main entrance to the new childcare centre would be via South St and ample street and onsite carparking is planned.

The upgrade would deliver additional childcare places to Alstonville and would be located close to Alstonville Primary School.
