Extinction Rebellion demonstration in Lismore

A 48-year-old woman has been charged with malicious damage after being arrested outside Page MP Kevin Hogan’s offices in Lismore during an Extinction Rebellion demonstration.

Protesters wore bright red as they gathered around the Nationals MP’s base about 1pm on Thursday.

Police said they were called to the offices about 2.30pm.

Mr Hogan, who was contacted for comment, was in Canberra when the demonstration happened.

The demonstration came after an authorised protest happened outside the same Molesworth Street offices on Tuesday when paint was used on the footpath and glass windows.

At the protest, demonstrators pushed white “ghost prams”, symbolising their mourning “for the unborn children whose future could be stolen” by the selfish acts of those alive today.

Byron Bay resident and tourism worker Emma Briggs, 52, said the demonstration was part of a nationwide campaign to bring attention to the need for urgent and immediate action on climate change.

“Scientists have been warning about our current crisis for about 30 years,” she said.

“We have tried marches and petitions and letters, but in 2021, the government cannot even agree on net zero emissions for 2050, which doesn’t come close to what we need.

“It’s about time our government earned some respect by acting on climate change like the emergency it is.”

The woman who was charged for malicious damage is due to face Lismore Local Court on November 15.
