Matthew Steven Rae jailed for stealing firearms, power tools, break and enter, receiving stolen car parts

A North Coast man who broke into a home nestled in a sleepy rural suburb and stole eight guns among other items in a brazen break and enter has learned his fate.

A North Coast man who brazenly broke into a house and shed near Evans Head and looted guns, power tools and a trailer has fronted court to learn his fate.

Matthew Steven Rae, 40, appeared via audio visual link in Lismore local court before Magistrate Michael Dakin on Monday.

Police arrested Rae at his Brewers Rd, Kippenduff address – one hour west of Evans Head – after police conducted a search of the premises.

Police seized several firearms on the property that underwent forensic testing.

The Kippenduff man was convicted of breaking into a shed on Whiporie Rd, Bungawalbin, and stealing eight firearms between February 14 and 23, 2023.

Rae was convicted of two counts of break, enter and steal under $60,000, three counts of receive motor vehicle part-theft serious indictable offence under $5000, and receive property-theft serious indictable offence under $5000.

He was also convicted of steal firearm or imitation firearm, steal property in dwelling-house under $2000, two counts of steal trailer, larceny, and enter building/land with intent to commit indictable offence.

Mr Dakin sentenced Rae to an aggregate term of imprisonment of three years backdated to May 1, 2023 with a non-parole period of 20 months.

Rae’s sentence will conclude on April 30, 2026.

He will be released to parole on December 31, 2024.
