POLICE have appealed for information after an assault and attempted car theft in Casino.

Richmond Police District Chief Inspector Nicole Bruce said a man was in his car outside the Richmond Lodge nursing home on Barker St, Casino, when he was approached by five young people about 2.45pm on Tuesday.

Insp Bruce said the group were all male and were described as Aboriginal in appearance, aged 14 to 16.

She said an altercation occurred between the 49-year-old man and the group.

"The victim has driven off only a short way when the rear window of his car was smashed," she said.

She said the man saw the youths running away, but one of them returned a short time later.

"This male then punched the victim, resulting in a small cut to his mouth," she said.

"Then (the male) walked away again."

She said the same teen then approached the victim again, stating he was going to steal the car.

He then entered the victim's car, but the 49-year-old - who was standing on the passenger side -reached over and removed the keys from the ignition.

He was again assaulted by the teen, this time struck to the head with a lump of wood, Insp Bruce said.

Insp Bruce said anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the group involved should contact Casino Police on 02 6662 0099.
