LISMORE'S potholed roads are likely to stay that way for some time, the city council has warned.

In a statement, the council says it "is prioritising road repairs to target the worst-affected areas", but said that was a difficult job with the ongoing wet weather.

"I have had lots of comments on Facebook and absolutely understand people's frustration but the truth of the matter is we cannot fix all of the roads at once and need to prioritise in this kind of situation," Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell was quoted saying in the statement.

"We have had sustained rainfall for weeks now and we have limited resources at our disposal. We urge people to drive to conditions and be mindful that roads have deteriorated.

"We want everyone in our community to stay safe and ask people for patience and common sense during this very wet time."

The council described the level of rain received since Australia Day as "unprecedented", with three moderate floods and continuing rain creating an estimated repair bill of $2.4 million and rising.

Lismore remains in minor flood the Wilsons River at 4.99m as of 1.49pm, well above the minor flood level of 4.2m. The river level peaked at 5.05m last night, well below the moderate level of 7.2m.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting showers across the Northern Rivers through the rest of the week.
