Lismore City Council and Brookfarm have helped confirm the Northern Rivers as a sustainability hotspot in NSW with wins in the Green Globe Awards.
The awards, handed out by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, celebrate excellence, leadership and innovation in sustainability.
Brookfarm won the Premiers Award for Environmental Innovation and the Small Business Sustainability Award. They were awarded for their use of solar power on their bakehouse, conservation of water, and rainforest regeneration.
They reduced waste, and pioneered biological controls in macadamia farming.
The Lismore City Council was awarded the Regional Sustainability Award and the Local Government Sustainability Award.
The awards were for employing renewable electricity sources, starting a solar farm, developing the Biodiversity Management Strategy, building the materials recovery facility, and employing landfill rehabilitation techniques.
